Barcelona, European metropolis placed on the Mediterranean coast in Northeast of Spain, is a famous city mainly because of architectural structures of Antonio Gaudí and other artists who worked here. The second largest city in Spain offers you a wide range of activities of spending your leisure time providing not only sports activities, but also cultural. Barcelona, as the capital city of Catalonia, is also the economic center of this region.

History

Barcelona, Barça, or Barcino, as it was called in the Middle Ages, considered as its founder Iberian tribes. During its history, it was affected mainly by French and Italians, what could be seen mainly in the Catalan-language "langue d'oc" which has in common with French. There was a boom in 11th century and the city was constantly spreading. This trend was unfortunately stopped in the 15th century when the town was largely destroyed and lost its advantageous position. The transformation of the city began in the 19th century. The city started to specialize in trade and industry, and began to change its architectural appearance, mainly thanks to the architect Antonio Gaudí. His personality is associated with the most famous building in Barcelona- La Sagrada Familia Cathedral which building structure has not been finished until today. Despite of this fact it is the most magnificent building in Barcelona. In 1992, the Olympic Games took place here and brought to the city investment flow and opportunity for further growth, what we can see at present.

Transport

An integrated transport system is providing by buses, trams, metro and suburban trains. The best way of traveling for visitors is going by metro, which has a sufficiently network with 6 lines and in comparison with the buses it goes relatively often and in time. There is a possibility of using taxi services, but you will have to probably face the language barrier, because taxi drivers often do not speak English. Renting a car in the town is not advantage, because there are quite frequent traffic jam and parking is very expensive. This form of traveling is efficient if you want to drive around the city.
